to Tessa Acoose

The 2008 Spirit Award recipient is Tessa Acoose who exemplifies the meaning of this award. Tessa is 15 years old and lives in Regina and attends the Robert Usher Collegiate. Tessa is described by her peers and nominator as a kind, trustworthy and motivated young woman. Tessa has experienced in her life many adversities and hardships such as changing schools numerous times due to family situations, illness and in her own words “the average 15 year old could not relate to what she has seen”. However, Tessa is adamant about overcoming these obstacles as she learns from the experiences she learns to cope with issues as they arise.

Tessa says that her spirituality plays an important part in her life and is what helps her to focus and to follow her dreams. Her spirituality is what gives Tessa the foundation for overcoming the adversity she has experienced. Her goal is stay on a healthy path and to bring honor to her people. Tessa long term goal is to have a career that will assist First Nations students to be proud of where they come from and to plan for a successful future.
