Reduce Reuse Recycle

The three Rs of environmental responsibility are the building blocks of SaskTel’s approach to sustainability: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. There are many examples of SaskTel’s commitment to these basic concepts.

  • Over the past few years, SaskTel has significantly reduced the overall percentage of waste that goes to landfills. Of the approximately 1 million kilograms of waste we produce each year, about 650,000 kilograms or 65 percent is being recycled, returned or reused.

  • SaskTel recycles all paper and cardboard. More than 136,000 kilograms of paper and 114,000 kilograms of cardboard are recycled each year. SaskTel is also working to cut paper consumption. All office paper used is now at least 30% recycled content or from managed forests, and employees print on both sides of the page whenever possible. Every bit counts.

  • In 2007, SaskTel became one of the first companies in Saskatchewan to launch a Greenhouse Gas Management Plan.

  • SaskTel has reduced fuel consumption by purchasing new vehicles that are twice as fuel efficient as the vehicles they replaced. SaskTel employees are also reducing travel through the use of Video Conferencing. 854 video conferences reduced travel by 427,000 kilometres in 2008.

  • Electrical consumption is being reduced by ensuring that all new equipment is the most efficient available and that building improvements improve efficiency. A Switch Off and Save campaign encourages employees to turn off unused electrical devices to reduce consumption.

  • Our Directory Recycling program involves customers and student volunteers across the province. Each year, about 300,000 SaskTel directories are recycled through the program, which has diverted over 2.7 million kilograms of paper from landfills since its inception.

  • SaskTel helps SaskTel customers recycle wireless devices, cell phone batteries, accessories and inkjet cartridges. Within SaskTel, recycling programs for paper, batteries, printer cartridges, metal, fluorescent light bulbs and other items are reducing the amount of waste we send to landfills.

  • SaskTel is proud to support Computers for Schools along with the SaskTel Pioneers volunteer organization. The Computers For Schools program has operated since 1993 and has collected, refurbished and provided more than 30,000 computers to Saskatchewan schools free of charge.
