Youth in Humboldt and surrounding area are recognized for safe behaviour

Through the Positive Ticketing Campaign, SaskTel is helping to make the right kind of impact on youth and adult minds by encouraging Humboldt residents to be safe and wear a helmet.

Sponsored by SaskTel, Safe Communities Humboldt and Area’s Positive Ticketing Campaign has been hitting the streets and handing out tickets to people in and around the Humboldt area who make safe choices. Tickets can be awarded for wearing helmets while skateboarding, riding bicycles and crossing the street at marked cross walks.

“Having our youth and adults modelling positive and safe behaviors encourages others to do the same which ultimately leads to a more safety-conscious community,” said Shari Hinz, Executive Director of Safe Communities Humboldt and Area.

The campaign was founded in 2014, and it’s also aimed at tightening the bond between the community and several emergency service outlets.

The Humboldt RCMP, Humboldt & District Ambulance Service, and the Humboldt Fire Department have been handing out the tickets, which can be redeemed for mini-golf passes, bowling vouchers, and jumbo beach balls, among other prizes donated by SaskTel.

At the end of the campaign, on September 15, 2018, anyone who redeemed their ticket for an individual prize will be entered in the grand prize draw for a pair of Beats Headphones.

“One of the focus areas of our Community Investment Program is Youth, so a program such as the Positive Ticketing Campaign that awards tickets for youth demonstrating positive safety choices is a perfect fit,” said Lindsay Manzenc, manager of SaskTel’s Community Investment Program.

By encouraging positive behavior and offering diverse programming, both SaskTel and Safe Communities Humboldt believe strong leaders will emerge from the Humboldt area’s youth, ultimately helping to benefit Saskatchewan into the future.

Other programs by Safe Communities Humboldt include: Youth Safety (P.A.R.T.Y. Program - Prevent Alcohol & Risk Related Trauma in Youth), Farm Safety (Progressive Agriculture Safety Days in schools), Rail Safety Awareness Programs, Seniors’ Safety (Falls Prevention and Senior Abuse.)

“No other agencies undertake this type of broad safety education in our region, therefore our organization plays a vital and unique role in the communities we serve,” said Shari.
