General Traffic Management Policies

General Traffic Management Policies

SaskTel works hard to ensure continued efficient operation of all our services. We have a right to monitor and manage our services to ensure they operate in an effective manner for all customers. We may monitor any content, bandwidth consumption and speed of service provided to ensure the best experience possible for users of our service. By having these traffic management practices in place, we can maintain a higher quality of service for all customers while only affecting a very small group of our highest-usage users.

The information that follows offers more detail about who is affected by these policies, when they take place, what data is subject to management, and how it will affect your experience using SaskTel services.

Mobile Wireless Data

Fixed Wireless Data (High Speed Fusion interNET)

Mobile Wireless Data

We manage the mobile wireless bandwidth and the amount of data consumed by our customers. By managing the data usage of a very small group of the heaviest data users, we can maintain a higher quality of service for all data customers.

What this means for you

The vast majority of customers will not experience any change. Our policies will only impact those data users with overly heavy use. Only customers who exceed their data plan usage limit or if more than one-half of their usage is outside the province will be affected and see slower speeds. As a result of these measures for extraordinarily heavy data users, upward of 95% of our customers using data will have a better experience and more consistent speeds.

When will data management policy be applied?
For customers on SaskTel wireless plans that include unlimited data, the SaskTel Wireless Fair Use Policy will be applied starting at 10 GB per billing period. On the Ultimate 100 plan, the Ultimate 105 plan, and the VIP 85 plan, the SaskTel Wireless Fair Use Policy won't be applied until 15 GB per billing period.  There are no usage limits on international data.

To be clear, the data management policy does not affect all the plans, only the unlimited ones. For example, if you have the Ultimate 13th Man plan, your plan comes with 13 GB of data per billing cycle, with additional Canada-Wide data charges on anything beyond 13 GB. If you continue to use data beyond 13 GB in the same billing cycle, you'll be charged for the additional data until the end of your billing cycle and your speed will not be limited. We also use Network Data Optimization on the 4G and 4GLTE network to improve media streaming by encoding files to reduce their size.

What happens if the usage limits are exceeded?

If you exceed the SaskTel Wireless Fair Use Policy usage limits, your wireless data service will be slowed down to 2 Mbps download speed and 2 Mbps upload speed for the remainder of your billing period. If you go over the data limit, you'll receive a text message from SaskTel informing you that your data speed has been reduced for the rest of your billing period. At the end of your billing period, your data speed will return to normal. However, if your data usage exceeds the limit in any subsequent billing period, your wireless data service will again be slowed for the remainder of that period.

How will the reduced speeds affect my experience?

Please be assured this speed slowdown will still allow you to access basic telecommunications services such as: web browsing; email, instant message; streaming radio and streaming video in standard definition. However, it will impact higher bandwidth consuming applications such as streaming high definition video.

Fixed Wireless Data (High Speed Fusion interNET)

High Speed Fusion interNET usage is managed by the High Speed Fusion interNET Fair Access Policy, which allows SaskTel to apply additional charges should your total data usage exceed the included data in a given monthly bill cycle.  Additional data usage fees help to support network improvements so we can provide fast Internet access without restricting upload or download speeds for heavy users. This ensures a high-quality Internet experience for all customers, while making sure you only pay for the Internet service you use.

What this means for you

A subscription to High Speed Fusion interNET includes 100 GB of data every month. If you go over 100 GB, you are subject to additional data usage fees, but there are no restrictions on upload or download speeds. Fusion service provides download speeds of up to 5 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 1 Mbps. If you purchase the Fusion interNET Speed Boost Add-On, download speeds can be increased to up to 10 Mbps and upload speeds can be increased to up to 2 Mbps.

When will the data management policy be applied?

The Fair Access Policy applies to all SaskTel High Speed Fusion interNET customers. 100GB of data is included in each monthly bill cycle. If you exceed the 100 GB of included data, you will automatically be charged $20 for each additional 25 GB of data you use, up to a maximum of 100 GB of additional usage for a combined maximum monthly data usage of 200 GB. At that point, you have the option to opt in to pay-per-use charges of $3/GB for continued access to your Fusion interNET service beyond 200 GB. There are never any restrictions on upload or download speeds.

What happens if the usage limits are exceeded?

If you have set your notification preferences, you will receive a text and/or email when you are approaching the 100 GB of included data as well as each additional 25 GB of data between 100 GB and 200 GB. You will also receive a notification when you reach 190GB to allow you to authorize additional data usage at pay per use rates of $3/GB if you wish to use more than 200GB of data. There is no maximum data overage charge if you authorize additional data, and upload and download speeds are never restricted. Your usage will continue for the remainder of the billing period. If you choose not to authorize additional usage, your Fusion service will be suspended until your next billing period and you won’t incur any additional data usage charges.
