SaskTel celebrates 50,000 Max customers

November 20, 2006

After just four years, SaskTel Max Entertainment Services now has over 50,000 customers. These are exciting times for SaskTel Max customers, with the recent addition of one of Canada’s biggest high definition TV lineups, pay per view service, and the imminent arrival of Max Local On Demand community programming.

SaskTel launched Max Entertainment Services in 2002, one of North America’s first internet protocol TV (IPTV) services. In comparison, other telecommunications companies are just now beginning to role out IPTV services. At launch, Max combined television, high speed internet access and the ability to surf the Web on the TV, all for one low price. Within a year, more than 10,000 customers had signed up. In 2003, SaskTel launched Max Front Row™; a video on demand service that allows customers to rent movies without leaving their home, and offers full DVD-like functionality, including play, pause and rewind.

On September 19, 2006, SaskTel announced that it would introduce pay per view and Max Local On Demand community programming by the end of the year. On October 16, 2006, SaskTel announced the addition of 27 high definition TV (HDTV) channels to Max, becoming the first provider in North America to commercially deploy HDTV as part of an IPTV offering. SaskTel expects to introduce a personal video recorder service in the first quarter of 2007.
