2006 news releasesSaskTel Invites Young Volunteers To “GIVE 2 GET”July 14, 2006 SaskTel is inviting Saskatchewan youth to help out in their communities as members of the YOUTHnetwork Community Corps. The new program offers young people opportunities to volunteer their time to worthwhile community service projects in exchange for great prizes, including Saskatchewan Roughrider tickets. “We truly believe that the youth of today are tomorrow’s economic future and by helping them to develop work skills and abilities, we help to ensure they will lead the way to a prosperous tomorrow,” Minister Responsible for SaskTel Deb Higgins said. “SaskTel’s YOUTHnetwork Community Corps will allow the youth of Saskatchewan to contribute to a better future both for themselves and for their communities.” “We’re excited to offer young people the opportunity to learn new skills, meet new people and have fun while helping to make Saskatchewan a better place to live,” SaskTel President and CEO Robert Watson said. “SaskTel will be committing a portion of the tickets that we receive through our sponsorships to the YOUTHnetwork Community Corps.” The Community Corps is part of SaskTel’s YOUTHnetwork strategy, which encourages students to stay in school, pursue post-secondary education in Saskatchewan and fulfill their career dreams by remaining in our province. SaskTel’s YOUTHnetwork strategy has a specific focus on underprivileged youth as well as employment equity groups, including people of Aboriginal ancestry. The first volunteer opportunity will be the official launch event for the YOUTHnetwork Community Corps at the North Central Family Centre on August 12 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. A total of 32 high school students between the ages of 14 and 18 can volunteer three hours to the event and in return, each will receive one ticket to the August 19th Roughrider game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The community service involved will be building and painting a new fence for the Centre and general cleaning of the Centre's amenities to improve the atmosphere for the youth and families that use the Centre.
