January 24, 2008 A new phone scam is resulting in unwanted long distance charges for some customers. In this scam, a person generally calls a customer claiming there has been an accident or some other incident. The caller then requests that the customer dial *72 followed by a long distance telephone number. Since *72 is used to activate Call Forwarding service, the customer unwittingly forwards their phone line to a long distance number and is then responsible for all resulting long distance charges. Also, once the phone is forwarded, the customer cannot receive incoming calls. Phone scams have been around for many years. SaskTel reminds customers that they should never enter any numbers in their phone just because a caller tells them to. For more information, please contact: Andy Tate, SaskTel Media Relations |
