Roaming
Roaming is using a cellular phone or wireless data device while travelling outside the SaskTel cellular coverage area.
To learn more about how to get the most from your cellular or wireless data service while traveling, see Roaming under Support - Mobility.
Cellular
In Saskatchewan
SaskTel offers Roaming Partner cellular coverage in two main areas: south of Coronach and south of Lake Alma to the United States border (see coverage). This coverage is very limited when using a 0.6 watt portable cellular phone. With a 3 watt transportable cellular phone and external antenna, coverage may be extended.
In Canada
Through SaskTel partnerships with wireless carriers across Canada, you have access to analog and digital cellular coverage throughout the country. While travelling in Canada, you can access your Voice Message Service and other calling features, and you pay the same airtime rate you pay at home.
In the United States
While roaming in the U.S., all calls received, and all calls made to Canada or the U.S. are charged at the rate of $0.95 Canadian per minute, with no additional charges for long distance, U.S. taxes or daily surcharges.* You only pay for the U.S. roaming minutes that you use, and these minutes are never deducted from the free minutes included in your rate plan.
* May not apply to all National plans.
International Roaming - GSM
With International Roaming and an International Roaming capable device you can take your SaskTel voice and data service with you when you travel in areas served only by GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) coverage. International Roaming is offered in over 170 countries worldwide. For more information on how to use International Roaming, see our online support section.
Wireless data
1X devices
While roaming in Canada, you can use 1X service in Bell / Bell West, MTS, Telus and Aliant 1X coverage areas. There are no special or extra charges for roaming.
When travelling in the U.S., roaming rates specific to your wireless data service plan apply, however data usage is not deducted from the data included in your service plan.
EV-DO devices
EV-DO devices will operate on the EV-DO network, where available in Canada and the United States. When an EV-DO network is not available, the device will revert to the 1X network. Additional EV-DO coverage locations will be available as the technology expands.
