Product Details

In order to register for IP Relay service you must first submit a request for an account on the IP Relay service web page.

Once you have submitted your registration for IP Relay service, you will receive an email within 1 to 2 business days confirming that your registration has been successful. The email will also contain your IP Relay password and a 9-digit customer number which functions as your telephone number.

You can provide your 9-digit number to friends, family, business associates, and/or anyone who would be dealing with you via IP Relay.

Note: All IP Relay users require SaskTel home phone service and/or a SaskTel wireless number.

Communication initiated by the IP Relay user is called "Text to Voice". Communication initiated by a voice customer is called "Voice to Text".

Text to Voice

  • The IP Relay user logs onto IP Relay service web page and types the number they want to be connected with.
  • An IP Relay operator receives the request and attempts to connect the call to the hearing person.
  • Once connected, the IP Relay user types their message and the IP Relay operator "relays" the conversation to the other party by voice and types the response back to IP Relay user by text.

Voice to Text

  • Voice users call the IP Relay Service Toll-free at 1-877-618-8559 and provide an IP operator with the 9-digit identification number of the IP Relay customer they want to be connected with.
  • The IP Relay operator attempts to contact the designated party via the internet.
    • If the IP Relay user is logged in and accepts the incoming call, the operator simply relays the conversation between the two parties.
    • If the IP Relay User is logged out or does not answer the incoming call, the operator can leave a message for the IP Relay user to retrieve when they log onto the service.
      • When customers with Call Display receive a call through IP Relay Service, the name of the carrier will display and not the actual name of the caller. If there is no answer, the IP Relay user should call the number directly to allow their telephone number to appear on the Call Display.

Voice Carry Over (VCO) and Hearing Carry Over (HCO)

IP Relay service also provides VCO (Voice CarryOver) and HCO (Hearing CarryOver) assistance to IP Relay users who have the ability to speak or hear respectively. Both VCO and HCO options require the use of the 3-Way Calling feature (the IP operator does not provide this service). There is no additional charge for VCO and HCO options and no special equipment is required.

VCO: IP users who can speak, but have very limited or no hearing ability:

  • The operator types the voice caller's communications to the IP user. The IP user then speaks to the voice customer.

HCO: IP users who can hear but have speech difficulties:

  • The IP customer can hear the conversation, but responds by text to the operator, who reads the messages to the voice caller.
