SaskTel Relay Service allows people with a hearing or speech impairment to communicate with others using a specially trained operator as an intermediary. This confidential service is available 24/7.
SaskTel operates the SaskTel Relay Service (SRS) 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It is a confidential relay service provided as a basic service to people with a hearing or speech impairment in Saskatchewan.
Persons with a hearing or speech impairment call SRS using a Telewriter (TTY). Their typed message is received at SRS, the operator places their call and verbally relays their typed message to the other party. There is no charge for using this service.. Any long distance calls within Canada placed via SRS receive a 50% discount.
When calling via SRS, the called party's Call Display will register "SaskTel" and not the actual person calling. In a no-answer situation, if you want your number/name to appear, you can call the called party's number back directly and let it ring 2 to 3 rings.
Voice CarryOver (VCO) and Hearing CarryOver (HCO)
Voice CarryOver allows TTY users to speak for themselves and use the TTY to read the response of the other party. Hearing CarryOver TTY users can listen to the other party and use the TTY to type their message.
There is no additional charge for VCO and HCO options and no special equipment is required, just a standard TTY.
To use VCO or HCO just type or say to SRS operator, "VCO on" or "HCO on" and the operator will initiate VCO/HCO once all 3 parties are on the line.
VCO and HCO can also be used on TTY-to-TTY direct calls. For TTY to TTY calls, the person on the other end must also pick up the handset and replace it on the TTY at the appropriate times. For further information, please ask the SRS operator for assistance.
Note: When calling SRS, the line will continue ringing until a SRS operator becomes available, so please stay on the line and let the ringing continue until your call can be answered.
