General Traffic Management Policies

General Traffic Management Policies

SaskTel works hard to ensure continued efficient operation of all our services. We have a right to monitor and manage our services to ensure they operate in an effective manner for all customers. We may monitor any content, bandwidth consumption and speed of service provided to ensure the best experience possible for users of our service. By having these traffic management practices in place, we can maintain a higher quality of service for all customers while only affecting a very small group of our highest-usage users.

The information that follows offers more detail about who is affected by these policies, when they take place, what data is subject to management, and how it will affect your experience using SaskTel services.

Mobile Wireless Data

Fixed Wireless Data (High Speed Fusion interNET)

Mobile Wireless Data

We manage the mobile wireless bandwidth and the amount of data consumed by our customers. By managing the data usage of a very small group of the heaviest data users, we can maintain a higher quality of service for all data customers.

What this means for you

The vast majority of customers will not experience any change. Our policies will only impact those data users with overly heavy use. Only customers who exceed their data plan usage limit or if more than one-half of their usage is outside the province will be affected and see slower speeds. As a result of these measures for extraordinarily heavy data users, upward of 95% of our customers using data will have a better experience and more consistent speeds.

When will data management policy be applied?
For customers on SaskTel wireless plans that include unlimited data, the SaskTel Wireless Fair Use Policy will be applied per billing period, once use exceeds an amount associated with that unlimited plan. There are no usage limits on international data.

To be clear, the data management policy does not affect all the plans, only the unlimited ones. We also use Network Data Optimization on our network to improve media streaming by encoding files to reduce their size.

What happens if the usage limits are exceeded?

If you exceed the SaskTel Wireless Fair Use Policy usage limits, your wireless data service will be slowed down for the remainder of your billing period. If you go over the data limit, you'll receive a text message from SaskTel informing you that your data speed has been reduced for the rest of your billing period. At the end of your billing period, your data speed will return to normal. However, if your data usage exceeds the limit in any subsequent billing period, your wireless data service will again be slowed for the remainder of that period.

How will the reduced speeds affect my experience?

Please be assured this speed slowdown will still allow you to access basic telecommunications services such as: web browsing; email, instant message; streaming radio and streaming video in standard definition. However, it will impact higher bandwidth consuming applications such as streaming high definition video.

Fixed Wireless Data (High Speed Fusion interNET)

High Speed Fusion interNET usage is managed by the High Speed Fusion interNET Fair Access Policy, which allows SaskTel to apply additional charges should your total data usage exceed the included data in a given monthly bill cycle. Additional data usage fees help to support network improvements so we can provide fast Internet access without restricting upload or download speeds for heavy users. This ensures a high-quality Internet experience for all customers, while making sure you only pay for the Internet service you use.

What this means for you

A subscription to High Speed Fusion interNET includes an allotted amount of data every month. If you go over that allotment, you are subject to additional data usage fees, but there are no restrictions on upload or download speeds. Details on allotted amounts, charges for additional usage, and customer notifications can be found in the High Speed Fusion interNET non-tariff item.

What happens if the usage limits are exceeded?

If you have set your notification preferences, you will receive a text and/or email when you are approaching the limits contained in the High Speed Fusion interNET non-tariff item.
