SaskTel Pioneers bring wonders of space to Saskatchewan students

SaskTel Pioneers bring wonders of space to Saskatchewan students

October 23, 2014

At 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. today, the SaskTel Pioneers volunteer organization will be hosting Saskatchewan students in Grades 6 and 9 to hear the adventures of two real life space explorers, Canadian Space Agency (CSA) astronaut David Saint-Jacques and Astrogeologist Dr. James W. Rice.  The Pioneers are also sponsoring a student competition with over $5000 in prizes to be won that will be used towards the winning students’ school’s science programs.

“The SaskTel Pioneers are very excited to be able to bring this unique experience to young people,” said Ian Howard, SaskTel Pioneers Chapter 59 President. “As SaskTel recently completed upgrades to the education network, CommunityNet, we are able to include students from the over 790 schools and 75 First Nations across the Province to simultaneously access the presentation, which we couldn’t be more pleased with.”

The presentation featuring CSA astronaut David Saint-Jacques will take place at 10:30 a.m., with David joining the students through a live feed directly from NASA, and students accessing the feed using CommunityNet, the education broadband network provided by SaskTel.  The afternoon presentation will be LIVE, with Dr. Rice speaking in person at Miller High School in Regina at 1:30 p.m, with students across Saskatchewan also joining the event via CommunityNet. Both presentations will be recorded and will be posted to the educational network library, meaning all elementary and high schools in the Province will be able to access these presentations at a later date.

Media are invited to attend the in person presentation at Miller High School in Regina at 1:30 p.m. on October 23 and in Saskatoon on October 24 at Centennial School at 1:30 p.m.  To R.S.V.P, please use contact information provided below.
