How to look for a career
Different companies and industries use different methods for advertising their vacant positions.
Here you’ll find the most common forms of communication
used, so you can start searching for the job you’ve
always wanted.
Internet –
The internet is the most common and fastest growing medium
used for advertising positions. Many companies will advertise
for their vacant positions using the Careers section of
their company websites, much like we do at SaskTel.
There are also job boards available like Monster, Workopolis,
Careerclick, Regina Job Shop, and Saskatoon
Job Shop.
Newspaper – The newspaper was the most common form
of advertising for vacant positions in the past and still
plays a very important role in your job search today. Many
companies continue to use the Careers section of the newspaper
to advertise for positions. This is a great source for
those looking for part-time and casual employment
while you go to school. Saturday editions are the most frequently
used day to advertise vacant positions.
Student Employment Centers
– Many companies will take a
more targeted approach when advertising for positions specifically
for students (such as summer employment, co-op positions
and part-time positions). These openings will often be posted at applicable post-secondary
institutes. Most universities have Student Employment Centers
just for this purpose and students can usually use
their services free of charge. Check out the University
of Regina, University
of Saskatchewan, SIAST
, and SIIT.
Word of mouth – Employees can be a great resource
when looking for a job. They may be aware of openings before
they’re advertised, or they can tap into company information
sources and investigate employment opportunities, so you
can get a jump on the competition.
Career fairs – Career fairs (tradeshows) provide
a valuable opportunity to learn about different companies
and their job opportunities. Many companies will accept resumes
and will reference those resumes to find suitable
candidates for existing or future job opportunities.
Employment agencies – Employment agencies or headhunting
companies can also be used to find employment. While they
are valuable for job seekers, you do have to pay
a fee for this service, so they’re most
appropriate for seeking full-time professional positions (post-secondary graduates and experienced workers).
