Resume tips

Your resume often becomes your first form of contact with a potential employer. Therefore, it needs to be professional and reflect relevant achievements and skills that will make you stand out.

Your resume should consist of a cover letter and a biographical resume.

Cover letter – Your cover letter is very important, and sets the tone for your application. It should provide a brief snap shot of your key accomplishments and outline why you are the best candidate for the job. Sample cover letter (pdf).

Important tips for creating a strong cover letter:

  • Keep it as brief as possible. Most letters (with the exception of professional resumes) should only be two to three paragraphs long and no more than half a page in length.
  • The letter format should include your mailing address in the upper left hand corner, the date, and an opening salutation to address the recipient.
  • Opening paragraph should indicate what position you are applying for, where you heard about the position, and a one to two line summary of your most relevant accomplishments.
  • Middle paragraph should provide details about your education and relevant work/volunteer experience. Also discuss how your skills and experience would be a good fit for the position.
  • Closing paragraph should review briefly why you are the best candidate for the position and thank the reader for his/her time.
