The Regina Dawat Club food drive helps those in need during Ramadan
Hot on the heels of its first successful food drive in February, the Regina Dawat Club (RDC) was back at it again in June with a second drive that gathered enough donations to provide support to 40 families.
Recipients of the donations were selected with the help of the Regina Open Door Society, while additional donations were also made to the Souls Harbour Rescue Mission, and number of those in need in Regina’s North Central community.
After the group’s first food drive, they received a great deal of positive feedback which inspired Adnan, a SaskTel employee and one of the most engaged members of the RDC, to take the lead in organizing a second drive coinciding with Ramadan.
“During the holy month of Ramadan, many families fast from sunrise to sunset,” said Adnan. “It reminds us that it is essential for families to have a supply of food, and with donations from the local community, the RDC was able to help families in need as we prepared for the holy month.”
Throughout May and early June, donations of non-perishable food items were collected in large bins located at the Regina Huda School, the South Mosque, and with the help and support of the Islamic Association of Saskatchewan community. On June 1, group members gathered at the Tandoori Kabab Restaurant to pack the large number of donated food items and begin distribution.
Founded by a group of enthusiastic SaskTel employees along with some like-minded members of the community, the RDC is a non-profit organization that was launched in December 2017 and has been very active in the Regina area since its inception.
“We noticed an overall increase in the immigrant population in Regina and it got us thinking about what it takes for immigrants to succeed here,” said Yaseen Khan, SaskTel Consumer Sales Manager and one of the founders of the RDC. “We recognized that there are some significant milestones that immigrant families needed to meet in order to thrive and set out with a mission to help.”
To accomplish this, the RDC provides networking opportunities for immigrants and offers career development programing. But their work doesn’t end with supporting newcomers, it also has the larger goal of assisting everyone in need by conducting charity activities that will help unite communities and create positive change.
The group’s most recent initiative is their Inspire; Career and Development seminars. With the help of a sponsorship from SaskTel, the RDC hosted the first in its ongoing series of seminars, The Path to Engineering on June 24. During the seminar speakers from the engineering community spoke on a wide variety of topics related to career planning and becoming an engineer in Canada.
Saskatchewan is filled with amazing people who are doing amazing things for their communities. And, with SaskTel’s dedication to making life better in its home province at the core of everything it does, it’s little wonder that so many dedicated community builders end up finding their way to a career with SaskTel.
