Rosthern is about to get some blazing speed!

Rosthern is about to get some blazing speed!

February 2, 2017

The SaskTel Street Team was onsite in Rosthern at the The Rosthern Wheatkings Senior League Hockey game on January 20, 2017 to talk about infiNET and give away some great prizes!

The beautiful rural town of Rosthern, which is located at the juncture of Highway 11 and Highway 312, will be the site of a $1.8 million SaskTel pilot project that will upgrade Rosthern to the infiNET™ fibre optic network, Western Canada’s fastest fibre optics network.  With this, Rosthern becomes the first community outside of a major centre to receive infiNET.

“When planning the project, we went through a comprehensive and thorough selection process,” said Brian Eltom, Assistant Vice President - FTTP.  “It was determined that the community of Rosthern was the optimal location.  There were many reasons for this, but ultimately Rosthern is located roughly halfway between Saskatoon and Prince Albert and that was a big factor.”

Rosthern’s location between the two larger centres will allow SaskTel to leverage existing Fibre To The Premises (FTTP) expertise and resources from both cities to aid the project.

Among other things, infiNET will mean customers in Rosthern will now be able to download movies, music, and more with Internet speeds up to 260 Mbps, the fastest in the province.  They will also be able to stream HD movies, play games, and video chat without freezing, pixelation, or dropped connections.

Customers’ television experiences will also improve.  Once infiNET is in place, the people of Rosthern will be able to receive SaskTel maxTV™ service and begin to enjoy HD Programming on up to seven televisions and have Netflix right on their maxTV set-top box.  They can also record up to four programs simultaneously with maxTV PVR, which will allow them to record a show on one television and watch it later in another room.  Customers can also get more bundling options for maxTV with even faster Internet speeds.

“When the pilot project is completed, this will mark the first time a Saskatchewan town has access to infiNET,” said Brian.  “These are some exciting options for the people of Rosthern and SaskTel is proud to provide them with this outstanding customer experience.”

Construction on the pilot project is set begin in the spring of 2017 and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.  Lessons learned from this project will help SaskTel determine the feasibility of bringing infiNET to more rural Saskatchewan communities in the future.
