SaskTel enhances High Speed Internet in Northeastern Saskatchewan

SaskTel enhances High Speed Internet in Northeastern Saskatchewan

April 25, 2016

Today SaskTel announced that it is nearing a major milestone in its efforts to enhance services in Northeastern Saskatchewan.

By the end of June, SaskTel expects to complete a 3 year, $30 million project, in partnership with Cameco and SaskPower, to rebuild the backhaul network in Northeastern Saskatchewan.  As part of this project SaskTel is building a fibre optics line from La Ronge to Points North that will serve as the backbone infrastructure that will significantly increase the bandwidth available throughout the region.

SaskTel is also investing approximately $10 million in additional upgrades that will reinforce the radio backhaul network in Creighton and Denare Beach as well as upgrade the microwave radio system between Sandy Bay and Pelican Narrows.

“We understand the need for advanced and reliable communications solutions,” said Ron Styles, SaskTel President and CEO.  “These most recent investments serve as a testament of our commitment to our customers and the residents of this province.”

Once completed, these enhancements will allow SaskTel to:

  • Increase the capacity of the network and resolve the current network congestion issues in Creighton as well as increase the High Speed Internet download speeds from up to 1.5 Mbps to up to 5 Mbps in the fall of 2016.
  • Increase the capacity of the network and resolve the current network congestion issues in Denare Beach by the end of 2016.
  • Increase the capacity of the network and resolve the current network congestion in Sandy Bay, Pelican Narrows, and Deschambault Lake in the first quarter of 2017.

Added Styles, “SaskTel is continually investigating new technologies that could enhance our services in Northern Saskatchewan and all across the province.”
