SaskTel launches Text With 911 service to SaskTel customers in Saskatchewan

Since November 2016, SaskTel is pleased to offer the Text With 911 service to SaskTel customers who are hearing or speech impaired. Text With 911 is a service where residents who are deaf, hard of hearing, or speech impaired can register their cellphone so they can communicate with Sask911 operators via text message.

Text With 911 is only available for those who are deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired. These residents’ family members and close friends may also register their cell phones in case their loved one needs to use their phone in an emergency situation.

“We are pleased to be able to offer this importance service across our province,” said Ron Styles, SaskTel President and CEO. “It most importantly ensures that deaf, hard of hearing, and speech impaired residents have proper access to the 911 services they need in the event of an emergency.”

In the event of an emergency, registered users can call 911 but they do not need to speak. This is so that the operator will receive their wireless location and can hear any background noises that will allow them to better assess the situation. Once the call begins, Sask911 will initiate a text message conversation with the caller to determine what emergency services are required.

As with Sask911, Text With 911 should only be used for emergency situations that require an immediate response from police, fire, or emergency medical services.

“I strongly encourage eligible SaskTel customers to register for Text With 911,” added Styles. “This service will go a long way to ensuring all of our customers receive timely access to Sask911 services in the unfortunate event of an emergency.”
