For those involved in the Special Olympics Saskatchewan Youth Programs, sports can be a positive life changing experience.
The wide world of sports can mean a variety of things to different people. For those involved in the Special Olympics Saskatchewan Youth Programs, sports can be a positive life changing experience.
“These are wonderful programs that are growing very quickly,” said Deb Ottenbreit of SaskTel Community Relations. “The Regina program has really expanded and the organization now has programs in Lumsden, Saskatoon and Prince Albert.”
There are two main youth programs known as Active Start and FUNdamentals, both aimed at children from the ages of 2 – 7. Active Start is a family centered activity where children learn basic motor skills in a fun and safe environment. FUNdamentals is a continuation of Active Start, where participants transition from basic movement skills to basic sports skills, along with training and a bit of competition.
For some children, the youth programs are the first step towards possibly taking part in the Special Olympics Saskatchewan Provincial Winter Games one day.
The Games, which will take place in Regina from 20 – 22 Feb 2015, provide the opportunity for 164 athletes of all ages from across Saskatchewan to compete with their peers in a variety of sports. Sports include floor hockey, curling, figure skating and snowshoeing.
“Special Olympics Saskatchewan is all about highlighting the benefits of sporting activities to improve the lives of youths with an intellectual disability,” said Deb Ottenbreit who works with Community Relations. “SaskTel believes in the youth of our province, and we are very proud to sponsor both the youth programs and Special Olympics Saskatchewan.”
As part of the festivities, SaskTel will also sponsor the Special Olympics Saskatchewan SaskTel Awards Banquet, where athletes and volunteers will be in the spotlight.
A great time is expected for all in the spirit of sport!
