Student keeps finding success at SaskTel

Hussein Yaqub is an Engineering student at the University of Saskatchewan who is working at SaskTel for the summer.
Hussein Yaqub has been a part of SaskTel for three straight summers now.
Not too bad for a kid who’s not even twenty!
Hussein was discovered when he was part of the Electronics program at Mount Royal Collegiate in Saskatoon, which is one of SaskTel’s partner high schools.
“I’ve always been interested in technology, but I knew that for sure when I entered the Electronics program at Mount Royal,” said Hussein.
Incredibly, Hussein completed all the program requirements for both Grades 11 and 12 in one year, allowing him to return as a teaching assistant for the program as a senior.
“Since SaskTel employees are often involved in the class, Hussein’s abilities were noticed right away,” said Lyndsey Pankratz, who is in charge of all YOUTHnetwork programs within SaskTel. “From the beginning, Hussein really stood out as a bright, super motivated student with lots of potential and so it made a lot of sense to hire him through the Summer Hire program.”
The Summer Hire program is an 8-week paid summer employment program for high school students attending our partner schools. It enables the students to work in various SaskTel departments and learn about different career options we offer here at SaskTel, all while gaining valuable work experience.
Hussein enters his third summer stint with SaskTel as a Customer Service Technician. But this time as an Engineering student at the University of Saskatchewan. And the SaskTel ties don’t end there. Part of his tuition was paid for with the SaskTel Scholarship he received, which is valued at $3,000.
“I’m grateful for SaskTel and have really enjoyed it here so far,” said the nineteen year old. “The best thing I have enjoyed is the culture and the people. From the first day, everyone has been friendly and willing to help or let me look over their shoulder to see how a job should be done.”
While he has a few years to go to complete his degree, Hussein has a good feeling about what he would like for his career when he graduates.
“I started here at SaskTel, and hopefully am building a good reputation here,” he said. “It would be great if one day my future could be right here at SaskTel.”
