Regina’s new showcase venue is finally here.  I’m talking about the new Mosaic Stadium in Regina.

On Saturday October 1, 2016, Mosaic Stadium 2.0, which has been months in the making, opened its doors to a sea of football fans who witnessed the inaugural kickoff event of the new stadium - the SaskTel Fall Classic!

The SaskTel Fall Classic, a Canada West Universities Athletic Association (CWUAA) game, fittingly pitted two Saskatchewan clubs, the University of Regina Rams against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. The game was an opportunity to give the City of Regina a test run of the facility which will be home to the province’s Saskatchewan Roughriders beginning in the 2017 football season.

The announced paid attendance of 16,500 set a record for Canada West football, breaking Manitoba’s previous record of 10,199 set on August 30, 2013.

Not only was SaskTel a title sponsor at the game, but SaskTel has also played a major role in the construction of the new venue, responsible for implementing the communications network infrastructure for the stadium which was a massive undertaking of its own.

“It was really fitting for SaskTel to be the title sponsor of the first event in the new stadium,” said Jodine Smith, a SaskTel Community Relations Manager.

“Not only has SaskTel sponsored university athletics for a long time, but SaskTel is also a founding sponsor of the new Mosaic Stadium where we have installed a leading edge communications network. It is sure to add to fans’ game day experience when they attend events at the new stadium in the future.”

Led by four touchdown passes by Noah Picton, the University of Regina Rams won the SaskTel Fall Classic defeating the Huskies 37-29.  This was the U of R’s fourth consecutive victory, which improved its record to 4-1.  The Huskies, who won the season opener against Regina, are 2-3.
