SaskTel supports a new angle on fishing

A fishing angle

The Saskatchewan Association of Conservation Officers (SACO) is a non-profit organization aiming to make a difference in the lives of underprivileged kids with the Hooked on Fishing Not on Drugs program.

Any parent who has children involved in sporting activities will tell you the costs involved can be steep.

Prohibitive costs for sign-up, equipment, travel, and other expenses often mean some youngsters might never get the opportunity to participate in sports as they grow up.

The Saskatchewan Association of Conservation Officers (SACO) is a non-profit organization aiming to change that and make a difference in the lives of underprivileged kids. They’re reeling in excitement with the Hooked on Fishing Not on Drugs (HOFNOD) program.

“HOFNOD uses the development of fishing skills as a gateway to teach youth about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, as well as provide assistance on how to deal with the challenges facing them in their young lives,” said Reba O’Watch, Community Relations Specialist.

The program helps kids from across Saskatchewan participate in the low cost sport of fishing, and provides an alternative to drugs and/or alcohol with a focus on building life skills such as self-esteem, problem solving, and goal setting. They may also develop better relationships with family and a respect for themselves, the community, and the environment.

The HOFNOD program has two equipped, SaskTel branded trailers with a variety of angling equipment for kids of all ages. The trailers are currently stationed in Prince Albert and Weyburn, and move around the province as requested. Participating kids are taught by conservation officers the basics of fishing, including casting, knot tying, baiting, tackle, safety, as well as fish identification and biology.

“SaskTel is very pleased to sponsor a program such as this, as it provides such a positive effect on young people in our province,” added Reba. SACO hopes to have the program available in more locations across the province in the future, with additional equipment for aspiring young anglers.
